There is a plethora of rooftop bars to sit back and admire New York’s amazing skyline. Here are some of my favourites in Manhattan and Brooklyn.
1. Mondrian Hotel
9 Crosby Street, Soho
One of my favourite rooftop bars. Each year it changes its name and theme, so you don’t know what you will get. But you can always trust those views aren’t going anywhere! Some nights they also have bands playing. Opens 6pm, line up on the Lafayette Street entrance. They all say there is a door list, but you should be able to get in if you arrive early.
2. Jimmys
James Hotel, 15 Thompson Street, Soho
Amazing views over Tribeca, midtown and the Hudson and East rivers, so you wont see the typical landmarks but stunning all the same. There is a pool and an indoor lounge area. Great cocktails and the hotel will let you enter with no hassles.
3. 230fifth
230 5th Ave, Flatiron district
While this is not one of my favourite rooftop bars due to the bad attitude from the wait staff and because they pack you in like sardines in such a large area, it must be mentioned for its amazing 360 degree views and the fact it is open all year round. (They will provide you with “snuggies” in winter.) Also, majority of rooftop bars open from 4pm – these guys open at 10am on weekends.
4. Gallow Green
542 W 27th St (located at The McKittrick Hotel, home of Sleep No More.) This rooftop bar has a garden vibe and serves cocktails & punch bowls. Great place for a Sunday lunch.
5. Le Bain
The Standard hotel 848 Washington S.
Cool kids and cool views and the closest thing you can get to a garden with the fake grass. Located near the Highline. Great place for some drinks before dinner in the Meat Packing district.
6. The Press Lounge / Ink
48 Kimpton Hotel, 653 11th Avenue at West 48th Street.
Panoramic views, and also open all year round with classy interiors, reflecting pool, great cocktails. Whilst 250 fifth can get away with being a little more relaxed, definitely dress up for this bar.
7. The Refinery Hotel
W36th and 6th Avenue, Midtown
Very stylish, only a few years old with a 1920s feel and offers a great rooftop bar with upfront and personal views of the Empire State building. They also have a large indoor area for bad weather and hold live performances throughout the week.
8. The Ides
Wythe Hotel, 80 Wythe Ave, Brooklyn
Great views from Brooklyn, but line up early if you want a chance to see them!
9. Northern Territory
12 Franklin St, Brooklyn
Large, relaxed rooftop bar with great views of Manhattan. Serving great food and Aussie beers. What more would you expect from an Australian team in New York!
