Move over Disneyland. Burano is by far the happiest place on earth… How can it not be with all this incredible colour!!!
Most people have heard of Murano in Venice, famous for its beautiful hand blown glass. But the smaller island of Burano should definitely not be overlooked. Burano may be known for its lace making in Italy, but to photographers it is also a photographer’s colourful dream.
On our second day in Venice, after deciding not to take the midday ferry packed with tourists, we caught the late afternoon ferry around 4:30pm for the 45min – 1hr ride to make the most of the long afternoon low light. (To avoid harsh shadows on buildings and take better photos, avoid the middle of the day when the sun is high and opt for early morning or late afternoon for the best light.) Most of the people on this ferry were locals who got off at the first ferry stop, which left only ten of us to dock at Burano. Nothing delighted me more to realise we now had Burano (almost) to ourselves. We could roam the streets and explore the island alone without having to fight with hundreds of others for the same shot. Not to mention being able to step away from the fast pace of Venice during the peak of summer, overrun with bustling tourists. Burano felt like our own little private paradise.
